It is never too late, if we work on something collectively no one is going to stop us from achieving that target. Because it is about the present time and the coming generation, it’s about global warming and its harmful impact on human beings. The ongoing increase in global average temperature—and its effects on Earth’s climate system is a problem for everyone.

Over 1.5 billion tons of greenhouse gases GHG are released by the vehicle industry, now it is their responsibility to reduce the hazardous gases from the environment by changing the pattern of their work. The best and most effective way to bring change is to convert old diesel engines into electric engines, it will help to bring the net zero emission for the vehicle industry.

Why heavy equipment must go electric

Since the heavy equipment industry is thriving and the demand for equipment in the field is constantly increasing. While this may be true but also very alarming for the current environmental condition because it increases the hazardous gases. It is time for heavy equipment industries to upgrade their old equipment to new electric ones to contribute their noteworthy part to mitigating the climate consequences.

The strategic partnership between companies

One of the leading manufacturers of heavy equipment Komatsu and ABB have signed an agreement to collectively develop the integrated solution that will help them to bring net zero emission for heavy construction equipment. The strategic collaboration towards sustainability is inspiring and an essential step closer to reality.

The collaboration between ABB and Komatsu unites them to share their knowledge and experience as well as their products with the aim of developing solutions in the equipment market. The solution includes the generation of renewable energy and electrification of the heavy equipment.

Mobile mining equipment needs to be decarbonized to assist mine operators in meeting their greenhouse gas emission reduction goals. ABB and Komatsu are teamed up in a bid to reduce or completely do away with the use of diesel in mining by moving towards electric solutions. Technology and innovation have been, and will remain the main driving force to help ABB, Komatsu and the mines to achieve the required CO2 emissions reduction targets.

Statement of Dan Funcannon, senior vice president of surface haulage of Komatsu

On the eve of the partnership the senior vice president of surface haulage emphasized “We are glad that we can start this partnership with ABB and are looking forward to using both the best products and specific technological knowledge to progressively contribute to the making of mining industry getting as close as possible to the net zero emissions”. So, that the people, business and our equipment market can prosper together.

ABB and Komatsu have a strong obligation to customers, driven by the alliance to ensure they generate systems that are compatible with one another. The system is specifically built to help clients find appropriate solutions for their needs. Komatsu and ABB are currently focusing and concentrating on haulage, loading and auxiliary equipment. The specific goals aim to establish a balanced stage of equipment in the field of production and support to enhance the pace of transition into customers’ operations.

Comments of Joachim Braun division president of ABB

At the collaborative meeting, the division president of ABB Joachim Braun also stated that this paradigm shift will address and inspire the mining companies to transform their fleet in electrification. In addition, we will see machines which are completely electrified working in the mining sites. It is important to understand the value of strategic ties among equipment firms and there will be constructive business opportunities for both organizations as well.

He further added that there could be suitable technological options for the mining segments. Cooperation among the industry has already experienced real and quick improvements and that’s exactly what we’ll look forward to building.

The customer will witness the collaboration of Komatsu at the MINExpo 2024 in Vegas from Sept 24 to 26. In the international expo alongside leaving companies ABB and Kamatsu also feature their eMINE Robot Automated Connection Device. Also, the customer can get an overview of new electric models and used heavy equipment for sale at trade shows.

A closure

Leading equipment companies ABB and Komatsu will cooperate to develop solutions for net zero emission in heavy equipment. Both firms emphasize electrifying mining operations specifically. This collaboration aims to reduce diesel consumption and promote the adoption of electrification standards in the mining industry, ultimately contributing to a sustainable future.
